THE ROLE OF YOUTH IN PROTECTING TRADITIONS

The soul of Malaysia is enriched by the profound diversity of its races and cultures.

In an era of rapid technological advancement and minimalist lifestyles, many young people have gradually forgotten their cultural roots and lost touch with the meaning of “tradition.” Malaysia, as a multicultural nation, is blessed with diverse customs and festivals. Yet, these precious traditions are slowly fading due to modern lifestyles. However, no matter how advanced society becomes, traditional culture remains valuable and meaningful. Youth play a vital role in reviving and sustaining these traditions. Their role lies in their ability to innovate, preserve, and promote cultural, allowing traditions to continue shining in modern ways.

A group of ethnobotany students from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) hopes to turn that around by encouraging homes not to serve so-called “ketupat plastik” for festive season.

In today’s social media-driven world, platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have become powerful tools for young creators to share and celebrate cultural heritage.

For instance, many young content creators reinterpret folk songs, modernize traditional crafts, or interview local artisans, helping people around the world rediscover cultural treasures. In addition to in-person classes, many have turned to online courses that teach traditional skills such as festive pastry making, dialect lessons, and handicraft workshops.

Through both social media sharing and online learning, people can access and appreciate traditions anytime, anywhere. By blending tradition with modern innovation, youth are not just preserving culture, they are giving it new life.

Youth can also protect and sustain traditions through active participation in education and community programs.

For example, Penang’s annual cultural festival known as the “Miao Hui” is a perfect example of intergenerational collaboration in preserving traditions. During the event’s preparation, young volunteers and students work closely with elders to learn about their ancestral origins, traditional dialects, cuisines, and arts. On the day of the festival, they share this knowledge with the public and tourists, embodying the true spirit of cultural transmission through community involvement.

In addition to community-based initiatives, schools also play a crucial role. Traditional knowledge should be included in the curriculum, and schools should organize workshops or collaborate with cultural organizations and festival committees. This allows students to experience and appreciate traditions in tangible and meaningful ways.

While preserving traditions is essential, innovation is what keeps them alive.

With respect for cultural authenticity, youth can infuse traditional practices with modern creativity. For example, designing traditional attire using sustainable materials, composing modern music with traditional instruments, or organizing eco-friendly cultural festivals. Such efforts ensure that traditions are passed down through generations while adapting to contemporary needs, encouraging both the young and the old to reconnect with their heritage.

However, balance is key. Innovation should not distort or commercialize traditions to the point of losing their essence. True preservation means keeping the spirit of tradition alive while allowing it to evolve naturally.

In conclusion, youth play a crucial role in protecting and revitalizing traditions.

By wisely using technology, engaging in community activities, and embracing innovation with respect, they can ensure that cultural heritage continues to thrive. The real challenge lies not in the changes brought by time, but in finding balance, which allowing traditions to grow with modern progress while keeping our roots alive. In doing so, Malaysia’s diverse cultural identity will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
